Raymond Morua was born and raised in Ventura Ca. Throughout his youth, Raymond enjoyed playing sports, one year which he went undefeated and musical instruments such as the clarinet and piano. Raymond's mother made sure that he was constantly reading, this eventually led to his love of comic books and Ernest Hemingway that was also influenced by his uncle. As a young man Raymond was constantly reading about the world and current events, which fuels him to this day. Raymond has always had a thirst for knowledge and a love for the arts. Upon completing high school, Raymond enlisted into the U.S. Army. Raymond served honorably in the states, Europe, and the Middle East. With his arrival back home Raymond enrolled in Ventura College and received an AA in International Studies. He attended UCSB and to pursue his BA in International Relations.

#TBM Artist Interview: WAV Artist Vonder Gray

Vonder Gray is another artist at the WAV who has been involved with art and acting for over twenty years. Gray describes her art as “abstract expressionist”. “The color, the brush strokes, the markings if you will, are all conceived at an emotional level that informs the work both on the surface and beneath the surface”. Gray went on to say that she “is always interested in what’s behind the façade of a painting and of a person”.

Artist Interview- WAV Resident Luce Patricolo

Luce Patricolo, the Glass Alchemist

My interview with Luce Patricolo was unfortunately held to phone conversation and email. But I could tell from the brief communication, that Luce was an individual full of passion and life. When speaking of the WAV, Luce’s passion is felt though the computer screen. “The WAV’s intent and Chris Velasco’s dream is to keep artists in Ventura who have all but been driven away by lack of affordability, vanished endowments for the arts, and virtual risk of extinction within our current society. Raising the consciousness of Americans that art is essential to humanity and the feeding of ones soul. Where Europe has always been aware of the worth and contribution of the artists role in society, America, I feel is in need of an awakening of its value”.

Erin O’Brien Brings Your Walls to Life

Upon entering O’Brien’s studio the first item that catches your attention is a life like painting of three young boys. The painting was immaculate; the clarity was so precise that I could’ve sworn it was in HD. The beauty of this painting reminded me of another great painting done by a superb renaissance artist: “Portrait of the Artist Brother and Sisters by Sofonisba Anguissola”. Once inside I had the pleasure to make the acquaintance of O’Brien’s dear friend Betty. O’Brien was very humble, and without the help of Betty I wouldn’t have been able to pry some of O’Brien’s outstanding accomplishments out of her

#TBM Artist Interview- WAV Resident Colin Fraser Gray

Tea with Colin Fraser

Before meeting with Colin Fraser Gray, I had the opportunity to browse through his website; www.colinfrasergray.com. The website gave me a brief overview of Colin’s work, and his accomplishments. His work is mesmerizing; it jumps out and literally shakes your soul. This was the feeling it gave me from looking at the online photo’s, to see his artwork close up in real life was an experience all its own. From my research I came across interesting facts on Colin. In 2006 Colin rocked the city of Santa Barbara with his controversial sculpture “W”. The sculpture is a toppled, upside down McDonalds sign with green arrows shot into it. A very powerful piece that, I took as a stance against the corporatism that was running rampant at the time, and the head honcho known as “Dubya”.

Strike! And we’re not talking about baseball baby!

bowling2 “Yabba Dabba Doo” and “Lets Rock” would be the response of my bowling buddies Fred Flintstone and Al Bundy. The 805 offers a good variety of bowling alleys and they all have their perks. I’m sure most of you know, but for those of you who don’t… lace up those funny shoes and put those twinkle toes to work. Throughout Ventura and Oxnard there are three bowling alleys to choose from.
