Review: Mark Morris - Pepperland

Pepperland Liverpool 2017 Gareth Jones 05

Music and Dance
Sgt. Pepper at 50; Mark Morris at Eternity

Mark Morris, originally from Seattle, emerged at a time when Seattle was a hotbed for new music and emerging choreography. At that point in time, contemporary dance was also emerging from a period dominated by two generations of astoundingly creative choreographers who had tended to emphasis a stripped down visual sensibility, with rampant minimalism, and a narrowing of means in order to generate severe, instantly recognized personal styles.

UCSB Arts & Lectures presented Spain’s national dance company, Compañía Nacional de Danza, for its contemporary adaptation of Carmen over two nights, Tuesday, March 6 and Wednesday, March 7, 2018 at The Granada Theatre.

While the dancers possessed great skill and gave theatrical performances, the piece as a whole fell short of a truly contemporary retelling.

Beyond The 805
LA Opera joined forces with The Joffrey Ballet to put on Orpheus and Eurydice at the Dorothy Chandler Pavilion. Accented with beautiful singing, dynamic set pieces, and expressive dancing in inventive costumes, this performance of Orpheus and Eurydice puts a modern twist to the classic Greek tale but unfortunately gets held back from its fullest potential by a few flaws in execution.

Beyond The 805
The Joffrey Ballet’s Romeo & Juliet performed at the Dorothy Chandler Pavilion is a dynamic, contemporary take on the classic ballet. From the various costumes and settings spanning the 1930s, 1950s, and 1990s to the contemporary twists to the ballet choreography, watching Joffrey Ballet’s Romeo & Juliet is a refreshing and captivating experience.

Beyond The 805

The penultimate evening of FLAX’s The Dialectic of the Stars Bodies2 features choreographer and dancer Noé Soulier. Fabien Danesi, the curator of the series, describes LA as “both cinematographic and paradisiac, but also artificial”. His inspiration for The Dialectic of the stars draws a star in Los Angeles: a place of contradiction, hallucination and mystery, at once “political and poetic.” I keep his portrait of Los Angeles at the forefront as he introduces Soulier.

The dance starts and ends with black, the absence or complete absorption of visible light. What happens in between is red; as the second installation of a three part performance, minor matter is a fervent outpouring of joy giving life to rage, rage to joy.

Anaїs by Mixed eMotion Theatrix
9 September 2017 -- The greatest strengths of Anaїsa Dance Opera,  other than the conception and timing of doing this work at this time to begin with, is, first, the work of both the lead dancer, Kate Coleman, and the voice, Holly Sedillos, at its center.  Second, the choice of doing it with a minimal set backed by a projection scrim and using live and recorded sound, in short, a multi-media piece.
